Silesian Geophysical Observatory of the Institute of Geophysics
The Silesian Geophysical Observatory of the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences (IG PAS), is dedicated to aerosol studies using both in-situ and remote sensing techniques. It is located in southern Poland, in close proximity to industrial areas in both Poland and the Czech Republic. Established in 1926-1928 as part of the European seismological network, the Observatory has been owned by IG PAS since 1953.
Today, it plays a key role in both national and international networks for seismic and atmospheric pollution monitoring. As a part of the European ACTRIS research infrastructure, the Observatory conducts studies that include:
- In-situ aerosol measurements – the platform is equipped with spectrometers for measuring aerosol size distribution, a nephelometer, an aethalometer, and a low-volume dust sampler for further chemical analyses;
- Remote aerosol measurements – the platform is equipped with a ceilometer and a CIMEL solar photometer;
- Meteorological station – automated meteorological measurements are complemented by solar radiation measurements, including full-spectrum and UV ranges.
